Isaac Dasmani, and NPP Constituency Executives for Prestea Huni Valley to engage community leaders of Apiate on how to develop the community again after the devastating accident last Thursday.

Justin Kodua Frimpong prayed for God to continue to give the people of Apiate the strength to go through these difficult times.

Thirteen people have so far died and many more injured after a mining vehicle loaded with explosives moving from Tarkwa and headed towards Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle resulting in a massive explosion.

The impact of the blast razed down many buildings in the area and weakened several others leaving hundreds of residents homeless.

Meanwhile, government has assured victims and residents that it would ensure that new buildings are constructed for them.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia made this known when he led a government delegation to the area on Friday, 21st January 2022 in order to assess the situation.

We at Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group, like many Ghanaians, have watched in horror the events of the last twenty-four hours that have resulted in the loss of many lives in Apiatsi, a village near Bogoso in the Western region of Ghana.

While accidents are not always preventable, the knowledge that this accident and the resulting explosion of the highly dangerous explosives that caused the countless injuries, deaths and devastation was entirely preventable leaves us dumbfounded.

It is common knowledge that our resource-rich communities continue to bear the brunt of unbridled exploitation, crippling neglect and underdevelopment. That they would also be at risk of such blatant disregard to our laws, specifically with respect to the transportation of dangerous goods is irresponsible at best. This gory accident presents so many questions that need urgent answers:

What is the requirement under our existing laws regarding the transportation of dangerous goods?

Were these laws enforced?

What safety protocols were deployed once the accident occurred?

What happens to the people of Apiatsi?

What immediate preventive measures are being put in place given that trucks filled with gas and other explosive cargo continue to ply our roads, many of which are in a deplorable state, especially in the Western Region, while dodging craters, aboboya and motor riders with no escort?

We call for a Parliamentary Committee to undertake a thorough review of the incident and the steps that the Government intends to take to ensure compliance with existing laws regarding the transportation of explosive devices and flammable materials in the country.

While we commiserate with our departed brothers and sisters from Apiatsi (Bogoso) and wish the injured speedy recovery, we also call on the Government of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service, all ancillary services and agencies in Ghana to get to the bottom of this disaster, bring fair and just punishment to all those involved in this mayhem and get us the needed answers.

A seven-year-old girl Sulemana Hadija and her grandmother Madam Zakaria Asana are seeking justice after they were attacked by a neighbor with acid over a witchcraft allegation.

In 2019, the suspect, Afa Issah, poured acid on the seven-year-old girl and her grandmother when they were asleep at night at Katariga in the Northern region.

Issah was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the Circuit Court in Tamale and later granted bail.

The acid attack burnt the little girl’s face, chest, and other parts of her body while the grandmother sustained various degrees of injuries on the hand, stomach, and other parts of the body respectively to develop breast due to the acid burnt on her chest unless she undergoes further surgeries.

The little girl told DGN Online that when she was discharged from the hospital and they returned home, her friends were afraid to come closer to her due to the scars on her body.

“My friends were running away when they saw me after we came back home which made me feel bad as if I am not a human being again.”

The seven-year-old little girl had to stop school for over a year until she recovered and started school in the middle of 2021.

In an exclusive interview with DGN Online, madam Zakaria Asana said the suspect accused her of being a witch and that she attempted to poison his foodstuff.

According to her, the issue was reported at the chief palace but the suspect could not prove his allegation and was warned by the chief to desist from accusing her of being a witch but that did stop him from attacking them with the acid.

She told DGN Online that o the date she and the granddaughter still feel pains all over their bodies and that they face difficulties sleeping at night.

“As I am talking to you now it feels like my back has been hit with a metal because I continuously feel pains all over my body and the pain is unbearable.”

“All we need is justice to be served to myself and my granddaughter. The suspect should be rearrested to face the law.”

She appealed to the court to recall the case after it was put on hold due to Covid-19 for the process to continue.

Mr. Alhassan Zakaria, the victim’s son told DGN Online that the family has spent close to Gh 9,000.00 on surgeries and medical bills throughout their stay in the hospital and that they are still paying for other medical services.

“ Even till now we are still spending money to buy them some medicines and we are expected to go back to the hospital for some surgeries again.”

Mr. Zakaria indicated that when the suspect was arrested and arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate court was when Covid-19 hit the country and that the case was suspended due to that but to date, they have not been called for the case to continue.

“ They told us to wait until the Covid-19 is over but now the courts are working and they haven’t called us or told us anything about when the case will be called and now the suspect is walking about freely and has relocated to a different area.”

He, therefore, called on the police and the court to recall the case to ensure that justice is served to the family and the suspect prosecuted to serve as a deterrent for people who forcibly accuse people of witchcraft and hurting them without any evidence.

“ if not because we are law-abiding citizens I could have taken the law into my own hands and dealt with the suspect myself but we want the court to grant us the justice that’s why we are in court.”

Attorney General Department

When DGN Online contacted Mr. Salia Abdul-Quddus, the Northern Regional Chief State Attorney about why the case has since not been recalled he indicated that the original Prosecutor handed the docket over to another Prosecutor when he was reassigned to the District Court.

He also noted that some evidence has been led by the Prosecution and that the Judge who was in charge of the case has been transferred adding that a new Judge is yet to commence hearing of the matter.

Witchcraft Bill

In 2020, Ghana’s parliament indicated that they will pass a Witchcraft Bill prohibition or professional witchcraft or wizardry, a prohibition against the accusation of witchcraft, participation in the declaration of a person as a witch or wizard, and penalty against chief or headman encouraging witchcraft.

The Witchcraft Bill proposal came up as a result of the lynching of a 90-year-old Akua Denteh who was accused of being a ‘witch’ at Kafaba in the East Gonja municipality of the Savannah region.

The Northern part of Ghana has recorded alleged witchcraft attacks from Kafaba, Sumpini, Bimbilla, and other parts of the five regions of the North.

Currently, Sherina Mohammed aka Hajia Filipina, 40; and Latifah Bumaye, 25, a trader believed to be an associate of the ringleader in the Akua Denteh lynching are standing trial at the Tamale High Court charged with conspiracy and murder.

Embattled Minister of Gender and Social Protection Sarah Adwoa Safo who has refused to resume work despite arriving into the country more than two weeks ago has been given a final ultimatum to report to work or be sacked from her ministerial role, sources hinted MyNewsGh.com.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah who was supposed to temporarily serve as caretaker Minister of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection continues to act even after Adwoa Safo’s extended leave of absence ended and she arrived in Ghana.

The Dome-Kwabenya MP been the subject of controversy after the Minority alleged that she was absent from Parliament on when the House approved the 2022 budget.

Afyer this episode, the woes of Adwoa Safo deepened after the President banned all foreign travels for ministers and other top government officials. Sources say she had planned to sneak out again before the president announced the ban.

Adwoa Safo is aggrieved because she was ordered to reinstate Mrs Gertrude Quashigah as the National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme after she dismissed her.

A second statement signed by Adwoa Safo indicated that the earlier dismissal of Mrs. Quashigah was due to an “administrative error”. However MyNewsGh.com sources say the reversal was strictly based on a directive by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who backs Mrs Gertrude, who is the widow of late Major Courage Quarshigah.

Adwoa Safo considered the reinstatement order an affront to her authority as Minister as her judgment was being questioned. She insists she cannot work with Mrs Quarshigah.

In an interesting twist, Mrs. Quarshigah has a team lobbying for her to be considered as one of Adwoa Safo’s possible replacement should she resign or be sacked.

Madam Quashigah was officially named the National Coordinator of the School Feeding programme on December 24, 2019, taking over from Dr. Kwame Adu-Nsiah who was also fired.

She had already been serving as an acting coordinator for about a year before she was given the role officially.

Dr. Adu-Nsiah was suspended in December 2018 over allegations of corruption in the management of the school feeding programme.

However, a committee that was set up by the President to probe the issue exonerated him from any wrongdoing.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme is an initiative of the comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme Pillar 3, which seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (MDGs) on hunger, poverty and malnutrition.
